FireHost and Gazzang Partner to Bring Database Encryption to Leading Cloud Hosting Platform

August 18th, 2011

(BUSINESS WIRE)–Gazzang, Inc., the company securing data in the cloud, today announced FireHost, a fully-managed Web hosting company, will sell Gazzang ezNcrypt. A member of the Cloud Security Alliance, FireHost recently announced the industry’s first PCI 2.0 compliant, public cloud. Now, customers who host database servers in FireHost’s compliance-ready hosting solution will have access to Gazzang’s transparent data encryption solution to help prevent unauthorized access, even from system administrators with full root access.

“Database encryption is quickly becoming a last line of defense for websites with compliance and high traffic needs”

“Protecting the cloud requires sophisticated solutions that can stay ahead of the ever-growing list of threats, each more damaging than the last,” said Larry Warnock, CEO of Gazzang. “FireHost has proven its commitment to security and is taking it one step further by offering customers access to data encryption solutions. Whether patient medical records, student education transcripts or consumer credit card information, Gazzang ezNcrypt offers FireHost customers the assurance that should data get into the wrong hands, it will be encrypted, and protected from harm.”

Gazzang’s ezNcrypt is a fast-deploying solution for encrypting MySQL database transactions and data. The solution’s transparent data encryption (TDE) process auto-encrypts MySQL data at rest with dual authentication keys without making changes to existing applications or databases. Of key importance to hosting providers and their customers, ezNcrypt also protects critical data from being accessed by even root-level administrators as required by many government and regulatory guidelines. The solution is easy to implement and does not burden servers with undue performance degradation.

Firefox 6 Rolling Out

August 16th, 2011

Back in March, Mozilla announced it was amping up its Firefox release schedule, partly to keep pace with more-regularly updated browsers such as Google Chrome.

Among them: improved start-up time, bolstered pop-up advert prevention, and a Scratchpad tool for JavaScript developers. You can get your hands on Firefox 6 now through the Mozilla FTP servers, or you can wait until Tuesday for the official roll-out. Or you can just skip Firefox 6 altogether, and wait for Firefox 7. As Katherine Noyes writes over at PC World, even as Mozilla introduces Firefox 6, it is taking the wraps of the beta edition of 7.

Plan accordingly.

“We’re moving faster,” Firefox engineer Jonathan Nightingale noted recently. “A new feature implemented today and landed on mozilla-central can be delivered to our users in 12 to 18 weeks, not months or years. Incredibly, the same process that gives us that agility is giving us greater robustness, too. Testing and stabilization of each release across progressively larger audiences helps us find and fix bugs early, and build confidence in the quality of each release.”

In related news, Mozilla has announced plans to expand operations into the tablet and smartphone market, with an open-source operating system called Back to Gecko. “This project is in its infancy,” Mozilla reps cautioned at the time. “We’re talking about it now because we want expertise from all over Mozilla – and from people who aren’t yet part of Mozilla – to inform and build the project we’re outlining here.”

Godaddy Auctions More Domains Than Sedo

April 21st, 2011

Godaddy launched a domain name market analysis section on their site today which touts the claim that they are selling more domain names at auction than industry veteran Sedo.com.

Godaddy launched a domain name market analysis section on their site today which touts the claim that they are selling more domain names at auction than industry veteran Sedo.com.

According to Godaddy :

  • Go Daddy sold more than 109,000 domain names through auctions in 2nd Quarter 2011.
  • Sedo sold approximately 10,600 domain names in 2nd Quarter 2011.

The sheer volume of sales is likely due to the fact that Godaddy is one of the largest domain registrars that auctions off domain names that are expiring from it’s user base and Sedo is not.  The comparison is a bit apples to oranges, yet the numbers are stunning.   Namejet.com might be a better company to compare Godaddy with.  Namejet auctions many registrar deletions at a starting price of $69 compared to Godaddy’s $10 starting price.  It would be interesting to compare those numbers and we invite Namejet to jump in to this competition. :)

The data on the site also shows some interesting numbers about the amount of domains that are sold Buy it Now, Offer/Counter-offer and  Auction.  Again, the numbers are likely skewed with the Auction numbers receiving more volume because of the deleting names that Godaddy auctions.  The Buy Now number is the one that is impressive.  It would be great to see these numbers made a little more granular to know how many of those auctions were deleting/expired domains vs actual sellers and how many of the Buy It Now were Premium Listing names sold from home page searches.

Single Character .Biz Auction Pulls In Over $360,000 at Sedo

September 11th, 2009

Sedo just wrapped up their single character .biz auction today, pulling in over $360,000 on 31 domains, or an average of roughly $11,000 per domain.  Andrew at DNW pointed out that E.biz was the top contender with over 20 bids coming in and a whopping $66,001 price tag.   Several domains were not included in the auction including 0.biz, 3.biz, i.biz, o.biz and q.biz .  All of the results are unofficial as Sedo has yet to close the deals, but links to the auctions can be found below.

It’s safe to assume that most of the bidding was driven by speculation.  With the recent announcement by Overstock.com to acquire the O.biz domain, a certain credibility was given to these domains.  I’m sure other registries will take note of this play.  Often all it takes is one company/group to adopt something and a trend in speculation can be spiked.  The .Biz extention hasn’t likely seen this much interest since it’s launch.

1.biz  – $32,003
2.biz – $5,801
4.biz – $7,601
5.biz – $7,601
6.biz – $8,100
7.biz – $7,877
8.biz -$8,200
9.biz – $7,901
0.biz – Not listed
